Week 4 Blog Post

This week we narrowed down our plan as to how to capture our media during this project. Since golf is not a very fast-paced game in the slightest, we figure that it will be much more attainable to capture the media we need than it would be with other sports. The first order of business is to hit the golf simulator on east campus to work on our craft. I envision one of the more hectic aspects of collecting this media will be getting the proper amount of lighting, but I have faith that our camerawork will be superb enough to overcome this hurdle. We plan to checkout video cameras, tripods, cameras, and any other equipment necessary to maximize our product. We will, of course, check these out from the basement of Anderson Hall. To ensure we have the highest quality media possible, we will bring a computer along with us to upload and see what will looks liked when it is turned in. If there are any issues, we simply redo the shots. We will have to do this early and often to ensure there are not too many glaring mistakes. Since we will have limited opportunities to shoot film, we have to make sure we are on top of our game.

For my contribution this week, I helped build the set schedule for how we complete our project. We also established that I will be a decent portion of finding the history of the sport, and I’ll collect anything I believe is necessary. We spaced out something to do every week to make sure we are on top of our game. The major challenge I see happening is making sure we stick to our schedule, as we all have busy social, academic, and work lives as well. We didn’t work much on the actual project itself however, and that will have to change if we want to get this done to the best of our ability.

This week was a really good week for us because we were able to narrow down a lot of things and get an idea for what’s to come for our project. We’ve taken some inspiration from other projects done in the past and used that to guide what we want to do. I always like taking inspiration from others and using that to help make my idea unique, and that’s what we’re doing.

We’re aiming for something along the lines of a learning experience similar to the Taekwondo project example. We have all the elements we need to make something like this (video cameras, cameras, a teacher, etc), we just have to put it together. I think that this week we put ourselves in a good position and we’re ahead of the game. Some of the things we have planned are researching, building a website to document our learning experiences, and creating a video for added effect and spice up the documentation. I personally look forward to the media editing process and working with the website. I think we also plan on practicing our golfing skills sometime in the future so that the video will look a little better had we not prepared in that way.

Everyone in the group has been cooperative, on time, and contributed when we were working. I think the contract helped with that, but overall I think we have a committed group of people anyway. We aren’t assigning different tasks to different people which I think is the right call. We’re all pitching in where we can, and while some people might prefer to do one thing over another everyone is still willing to help out. I look forward to the coming weeks for when we start doing some real work after preparation is over.

Media for our project will mainly be made up of photos and videos. We plan on getting some of those when we visit the golfing simulator on east and when we go to the driving range. A majority of our media we plan to get a little later in the semester though once it’s nicer and we can go out and actually play a few rounds of golf. The equipment is just going to check out from the window. We will need a dslr camera as well as a video camera with all the tripods and accessories that come with them.I think the most important thing for our media to look good is just figuring out the angles we want to shoot from as well as figuring out what we are trying to capture for each shot.

This week we went over our schedule and decided who was going to do what and when everything is going to be in. We had the in class work day so we did the schedule as a group in class so we didn’t have to worry about that. I am doing the website and working with the media side. We plan on doing a lot of it as a group however so 1 person isn’t stuck doing something and we can all share our input.

Week 5 Blog

For our group to be successful in capturing the media we need, there will a few important factors. The first one is getting in a routine of being over prepared. Because our project will have us capturing media in a variety of different locations and settings, we’re going to need a variety of equipment to get the shots we need at any place we might find ourselves. That being said, it will be very important that we ensure we have anything we could possibly need to gather content. That will allow us to adapt to the situation we are in and collect quality media. Another important factor in capturing the media we need will be planning. Having a plan of what shot(s) we are going to get in what location, etc., will give us the ability to know what equipment we will need in advance, allowing us to be as efficient as possible. For example, if we know we are going to go shoot B-roll in the east campus golf simulator tomorrow, we know we need to plan for a darker setting.

This week, our group worked diligently in class to put together a team schedule that will give us deadlines that we need to meet throughout the semester. By having and following that schedule, we will stay on top of all of the different elements of our project, and make sure we don’t ever fall behind.

Clark’s Blog 1:

So in terms of what project we should do, I don’t really have any specific ideas. For now I was just thinking that we all can go over what we like to do and pitch any ideas if we do have them. I really like graphic design and started looking into that last semester. I’m not a master at it by any means, but it’s pretty straightforwad figuring out the basics of a design. I might make it a personal project to make a logo for our group just so that we can mark our final project.

I’m not too involved on campus other than being a student. I don’t associate with any RSO’s, so hopefully someone else knows more on that and might have a few ideas for a project. I grew up in Lincoln so I know some cool spots that might be good for some sort of project like Sunken Gardens or some exquisite restaurants.

Some things I don’t really enjoy doing are videography and photography. I like taking photos, but knowing the fundamentals of taking a photo and adjusting the settings isn’t my strong suit. Everything else I’m good with doing, even writing.

I helped to create the blog and add every one to it this week, think of a group name and brainstorm a few ideas for a project.

Creating a good, detailed and thorough schedule will be vital to completing our project, and completing it well. Just as important, however, will be making a point to follow the schedule and abide by what we lay out in it. I’m really looking forward to getting to work on our project. I think we have a really unique project idea that we can accomplish using a lot of different angles and strategies. Our biggest challenge, however, will be weather. Because our project is learning how to play/getting better at golf, and golf is a largely outdoor sport, weather will be huge for us. Thankfully, there is a lot we can do for which we don’t need to be outside. Due to resources like the East Campus Rec Golf Simulator, we can get a lot done before we actually have to go outside.

This week, as a group, we worked to put together a presentation that would show the class and other J School staff our project ideas. Additionally, we presented the project, and talked further about the possibilities for our project ideas, and the different angles we can take with it. Hopefully in the near future, we can get a warm day and get to work outside!

I think that a schedule is the most important thing for organizational purposes. We are all college students and between school and jobs we have a lot going on. Creating a schedule allows us to figure our group time into the many different events going on. This also allows us to stay on track and check off our goals as the project progresses.

The project we chose was the golfing project. We liked the teacher-student aspect of it and so we thought it would be really fun to do. We are also all sports guys so doing something over a sport was another intriguing thing for us. I think that the biggest challenge for our project is going to be battling the weather since golf is an outdoors sport. However to combat that, we plan on doing a lot of our beginning stuff in the east campus golf simulator and then once it is nice out later in the semester we can get outside and get the video and photography that needs to be done. Besides the weather I think another challenge we may face is just getting on a golf course that is cheap but with the connections in our group I don’t think that will be a problem.

This week I participated in the presentation. It was fairly simple and there were no complications so as long as we keep communicating we should have no issues.

Week 3 Blog Post

Creating a schedule is imperative for this to go as smoothly and as successfully as possible because it gives us a guideline to follow through on for the rest of the semester. If there is no schedule, this project could go increasingly erratic as time goes on and it can be tough to keep a consistently good product. While we already figured we were going to settle on club golf very early on in the semester, we ironed out the details this week, thanks to the experts that came in to class, and so we have firmly settled on this idea. While the ideas of graffiti art and cooking were also fun ideas, it simply would not be as realistically achievable as golfing would be, especially with Zach Dickey being here to be a help in this aspect since he is on the club golf team at the university. The major challenge that comes to mind is the weather, thanks to the frigid and snowy temperatures that Nebraska can offer from time to time. However, we can work around this by doing inside shots at the simulator when it’s cold out, and getting our better outside work done when the skies clear up and the sun blesses us.

I helped Zach make the PowerPoint and presented him with feedback and more questions that the experts could answer for us. The main challenge was coming up with alternative plans, since we really wanted to do golf from the start. In the future, I will keep a more open minded approach so I can roll with the punches as time progresses.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to participate in the project pitches this week because I was sick. I was still able to communicate with my group and discuss what we wanted to do. Initially, as seen during the presentation, we came up with three ideas including learning how to cook and hosting a catering even for the final project, learn how to do graffiti art to eventually sell the final pieces for charity, and learn how to golf and show the experience of both an instructor and students. For the purpose of this blog I’d like to go over some of the reasoning behind each pitch.

Learning how to cook, especially as a college student, is an important skill. Although not always cost effective, there are ways to get around that and make a healthy meal. These are a couple of things we would explore, and overall what cooking looks like for a college student. In the end we’d host a catering event and use the skills we learn to cook for a crowd and work on being a team.

Although most of us aren’t artistic, maybe I’m just speaking for myself, the graffiti art project would have probably been a tough one but very fun. We’d be able to experiment with so many different styles and art forms and what the craft looks like. Towards the end once we feel confident enough we could create art to sell and give the proceeds to a local charity.

All three ideas are great, and after discussion we decided on learning how to play golf. It will be a fun experience that will be educational for all of us I think, and will be a good bonding experience. Although golf is more of an individual sport, I think our project will entail working as a team to create an interesting final project, showing all of the required skills needed for this project, and strengthening ourselves in areas that need improvement.
